About the Department of Economics & Business
贬辞辫别鈥檚 Department of Economics & Business is serving the largest percentage of students on campus and attracting more than 30% of each incoming freshman class.
Our department stands on the legacy of Edward Dimnent, the fifth president of Hope
College. On the heels of the Great Depression, Dimnent took the bold step to invest
in Christian liberal arts education by commissioning the construction of 贬辞辫别鈥檚 iconic
chapel and founding the Department of Economics & Business. He believed that graduates
shaped by faith and excellence could make a difference in uncertain times 鈥 and that
at a time when many were questioning the good in business, Christians should not only
be prepared for the market, but profoundly called to it.
Today, Dimnent's vision still inspires a program that is both faithful and excellent. That's why we focus on giving students the time and experiences they need to excel.
Initially, we start by building market intelligence. We immerse our students in community, ground them in foundational courses of excellence and expose them to a variety of business careers and professionals. Later, as they prepare to launch into the competitive marketplace, they spend time in upper-level classes where they engage in professional simulations, take on applied projects and sharpen sophistication within their field.
It鈥檚 clear that our combination of faith and excellence is something many students deliberately keep choosing.
鈥淗aving an academic department approach education with the goal of living a life for Christ, it propels us further toward him.鈥
